The Dual Zone System

The Dual Zone system is an enhanced version of the EGGspander system. It gives you the same versatility in a more premium, easier-to-use form, and it makes it simpler than ever to get to grips with everything the EGG can do.

At its heart is the Dual Zone Basket, a frame that sits inside the EGG. Cooking surfaces slot into it at two different levels. Because each surface is a half moon, you can combine them in different ways and set the EGG up for direct cooking, indirect cooking, or a bit of both at once.

The Half Moon Ceramic Deflectors do the same job as the ConvEGGtor, creating the gentle, indirect heat you need for roasting and baking. They also have improved ceramics and better airflow.

In the UK, new Large and XL Big Green Eggs ship with the Dual Zone Essentials Kit instead of a ConvEGGtor as of 30th September 2026. During the changeover some retailers may still have older stock, so it's worth checking which set-up comes with your EGG before you buy.

What's in the Dual Zone Essentials Kit?

The Dual Zone Essentials Kit contains one Dual Zone Basket, two Half Moon Ceramic Deflectors and two Half Moon Stainless Steel Grids.

Does the ConvEGGtor fit the Dual Zone Basket?

No. The ConvEGGtor doesn't fit the Dual Zone Basket, and the two systems aren't interchangeable. In the Dual Zone system, the Half Moon Ceramic Deflectors do the ConvEGGtor's job, creating indirect heat for roasting and baking.

Can I upgrade my existing Large or XL Big Green Egg to Dual Zone?

Yes. The Dual Zone Essentials Kit is available as a standalone product for existing Large and XL EGG owners. You don't have to upgrade, though: your current ConvEGGtor set-up works just as it always has.

Does the Dual Zone system fit the MiniMax Big Green Egg?

No. The Dual Zone system isn't compatible with the MiniMax. New MiniMax EGGs continue to come with a ConvEGGtor and a stainless steel grid.

Will my EGGspander accessories work with the Dual Zone system?

Most Dual Zone cooking surfaces are identical to existing EGGspander surfaces, so many will carry over. Compatibility depends on the item and the size of your EGG, so check before you buy. The ConvEGGtor is the one piece that doesn't fit.

Can you cook direct and indirect at the same time on a Big Green Egg?

Yes. With the Dual Zone system, place one Half Moon Ceramic Deflector on the lower level of the basket for indirect heat, and leave the other side open for direct heat. Add grids on top of both halves, and you can sear on one side while roasting gently on the other.
