Big Green Egg is making an important upgrade to the cooking surfaces that come as standard with a new Large or XL EGG. As of 30th September 2026, new Large and XL EGGs in the UK will no longer come with a ConvEGGtor. Instead, they'll ship with the new Dual Zone Essentials Kit.
The good news first: the price isn't changing. Here's what you need to know, whether you're buying your first EGG or you've been cooking on one for years.
What is the Dual Zone system?
The Dual Zone system is an enhanced version of the EGGspander system. It gives you the same versatility in a more premium, easier-to-use form, and it makes it simpler than ever to get to grips with everything the EGG can do.
At its heart is the Dual Zone Basket, a frame that sits inside the EGG. Cooking surfaces slot into it at two different levels. Because each surface is a half moon, you can combine them in different ways and set the EGG up for direct cooking, indirect cooking, or a bit of both at once.
The Half Moon Ceramic Deflectors do the same job as the ConvEGGtor, creating the gentle, indirect heat you need for roasting and baking. They also have improved ceramics and better airflow.
What's in the Dual Zone Essentials Kit?
- 1 x Dual Zone Basket
- 2 x Half Moon Ceramic Deflectors
- 2 x Half Moon Stainless Steel Grids
What comes with each EGG
Large EGG – £1,495 (unchanged)
Two half-moon stainless steel grids come in the box, with the Dual Zone Basket and ceramic deflectors supplied in separate packaging.
XL EGG – £2,050 (unchanged)
Two half-moon stainless steel grids come in the box, with the Dual Zone Basket and ceramic deflectors supplied in separate packaging.
MiniMax – no change
The Dual Zone system isn't compatible with the MiniMax, so it carries on as before, with a ConvEGGtor and a full stainless steel grid.
Four ways to set it up
1. Direct cooking
For grilling, fit the Dual Zone Basket with nothing on the lower level, and two Stainless Steel Grids or Cast Iron Searing Grids on the upper level.
2. Indirect cooking
For roasting or baking, put both Ceramic Deflectors on the lower level and both Stainless Steel Grids above.

3. Multi-mode cooking
For a mix of direct and indirect heat, put one Ceramic Deflector on the bottom left with a Stainless Steel Grid above it. On the right, add a Stainless Steel Grid or Cast Iron Searing Grid over the open coals. Sear a steak on one side while the veg roast gently on the other.

4. Multi-level cooking
Add a 2-Piece Multi-Level Rack on top of the Dual Zone Basket to cook or keep food warm at three different heights, each with its own heat intensity. It's ideal for a whole fish, new potatoes and charred veg all at once.

Other Dual Zone surfaces
These aren't part of the Essentials Kit, but they all fit the Dual Zone system and add even more options:
- Half Moon Cast Iron Searing Grid: for proper sear marks on steaks, chops and burgers
- Half Moon Plancha Griddle: a reversible cast iron griddle, flat on one side and ridged on the other, for fish, seafood, eggs and smash burgers
- 2-Piece Multi-Level Rack for Dual Zone System: adds a third cooking level
-
Carbon Steel Wok for Dual Zone System: for stir-fries over high heat.
You can buy these on their own or in bundled packs - see below. Most are identical to the existing EGGspander surfaces, so if you already own some, they may well carry over.
New Dual Zone Bundle Kits:
-
Dual Zone Deflector Kit: to replace the convEGGtor includes the Dual Zone Basket and 2 x half moon deflectors.
- Dual Zone Extra Kit: includes the half moon Plancha Griddle, the 2 - piece Multi Level Rack, 2 x half moon Cast Iron Grids and a Carbon Steel Wok.
- Dual Zone Ultimate Kit: includes the Dual Zone Basket, 2 x half moon deflectors, 2 x half moon Stainless Steel Grids, 1 x half moon Plancha Griddle, the 2 - piece Multi Level Rack, 2 x half moon Cast Iron Grids and the Carbon Steel Wok.
A note on the ConvEGGtor
This is the one to be aware of: the ConvEGGtor doesn't fit the new Dual Zone Basket. The two setups aren't interchangeable, so if you're mixing new and existing kit, it's worth checking first. Some accessories may work across both, but it depends on the item and the size of your EGG. If you're not sure, get in touch and we'll check for you.
Already own a Large or XL?
You don't need to replace anything. Your current setup works just as it always has. But if you'd like the flexibility of two-zone cooking, the Dual Zone Essentials Kit is available on its own for existing Large and XL owners.
